Faculty and Students of the Publishing Science Department Conducted Rural Reading Field Survey in Baiguoshu Village, Enshi City

To implement Wuhan University's targeted poverty alleviation work arrangement, promote rural children's reading development, and support the national rural revitalization strategy, on March 27th, a research team composed of Liang Zhao, Associate Professor of the Publishing Science Department at Wuhan University's School of Information Management, Chen He, a postdoctoral researcher, and multiple undergraduate and master students traveled to Baiguoshu Village, Bajiao Dong Township, Enshi City, to carry out field survey at the Rural Reading Observation Station.

At the Baiguoshu Primary School, our faculty and students conducted one-on-one in-depth interviews with 13 left-behind children. The interviews focused on the children’s reading habits, access to reading resources, and the frequency and quality of parent-child reading. The survey’s focus was on parent-child reading among left-behind children, aiming to deeply understand the reading status of rural left-behind children and provide a scientific basis for optimizing parent-child reading models.

Parent-child reading is crucial for children’s language skills, cognitive development, and emotional communication. However, due to parents working away from hometown, many left-behind children lack companionship and guidance in reading. This survey will provide precise support for follow-up parent-child reading services for left-behind children, helping them enjoy the pleasure of reading better.

This field survey not only provided first-hand data for academic research but also laid a solid foundation for promoting rural children’s reading. The Publishing Science Department of Wuhan University’s School of Information Management will continue to focus on rural children’s reading issues, leveraging academic research, on-the-ground investigations, and public welfare support to help rural children grow through reading and advance rural cultural revitalization.
